Scoliosis Stories

ALESHA'S STORY
Submitted December 17, 2005

It all started in fifth grade. I found out that I had scoliosis.

It wasn't to big of a curve so my mom decided to take me to the chiropractors to get therapy so that i didn't have to go through the surgery. I went to the Chiropractor for about a year. My scoliosis just kept getting worse. So my parents did a lot of research for different scolio doctors. When they finally found one I was half way through 6th grade.

The doctor gave us options for surgery, he said that my curve was way to severe to put the brace on, he said that it wouldn't do anything. We ended up choosing a surgery that just newly came out and he had never performed it before. We set a date for the operation. The doctor wanted us to go get an MRI to make sure nothing else was wrong so it didn't interfere, or to see if there was another option, just to be on the safe side. So I went and got it done, then i waited and waited finally we found out the outcome.

It turned out that i had Chiari Malformation. The doctor said that we need to go see a neurologist. So we set up and appointment. During our appointment he said a lot of things that really lowered my spirits of ever getting better. But he said that if the surgery was successful and the Chiari was the cause of my scolio then there was a chance i wouldn't have to have the scolio surgery. That made me happier. We then set up a date for my surgery, It was February 5th.

About a week or so after my surgery I went in for more x-rays. It turned out that the Chiari surgery didn't help at all, it just made my curve increase faster. It went from a 60 degree curve to a 71 degree curve in just about a week. I was devastated. We ended up setting the operation date for April 16th.

It is now been 4 years since my surgery, things are getting a lot better. I still have problems with my back and my neck but I always will.
