Scoliosis Stories

CAITLIN'S STORY
Submitted February 26, 2004

A couple of months ago, just before Christmas, my mom, being the worrier that she is, noticed that one of my shoulders was higher than the other. She said it looked funny and asked me about if we had scoliosis checks at school. I said no, so she made me bend over and looked at it herself. I had a hump on the right upper side of my back.

We went to our family doctor soon after, and he wasn't too helpful, he just sort of implied that my mom was being spastic. He made me bend over also, and didn't think the hump was anything wrong, he just sort of said that nobody's spine is perfectly straight. Which is true.

But after we left, he called a surgeon at the local hospital just to check up on it. The surgeon told him that yes, that is the sort of thing they need to look at, so I went down to the hospital for some x-rays.

I had a 37 degree top curve, and a lower curve which wasn't as bad. This made an even s-shape, which is why the doctor didn't see it. People were expecting one curve, I guess. But no, I was far more wiggly, and needed a brace and an MRI and come back in a few months. When I had to put my brace on cried. I wasn't especially sad, just pissed. Pissed beyond belief.

Anyway, I tried really hard to be good about the brace, I had to go swimming three or four times a week to keep my back muscles strong, so I showered at the pool and wore the brace constantly unless I was going swimming. I came back to the surgeon in about three months, convinced that my curve would be zero and it was going to be wonderful.

My curve did go up to 41, and he says I'll probably have to have surgery if the curve doesn't stop growing like this. Surgery sounds really gross. I don't like the idea of all those tubes in me. But I think that I'll probably be so doped up I wont care if I do have it done.

A little while ago, I had an MRI, and we are still waiting for the results to come back. If I have surgery, I'll update, but for now that's it.
