Scoliosis Stories

JAIRYS'STORY
Submitted July 30, 2005

Hello, my name is Jairys and I am 12 years old, female. I am a Cuban American. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 12 by my doctor. It all started off when I was in my house and I leaned over to get my pencil and my mom had noticed a curve on my back and said that she thinks its Scoliosis. So that same day she tried to get an appointment with a doctor. A few days later my regular doctor (Dr. Cubas) referred me to the orthopedic (Dr. McNerney) they took an X-ray and my doctor said that if my curve increase any higher than 23 degrees, that I had to be braced.

When I went back to the doctor a few months later, my curve had gone up to 33 degrees. And then my doctor said that now it will be a really good time to get a brace. I was super scared because I had no clue what it was like to wear a brace for 3YEARS. So my doctor referred me to another doctor that will measure me to get a Boston Brace .The name of my doctor was Walter. He was so nice to me and told me a story so I won’t be scared to wear the brace. And he also told me that I should wear my brace for 23 hours and then rest for 2 hours. 2 ½ weeks later I got my brace. It was so ugly and smelly. But then I told my self I have to do it so I could get better. So when I got to the car I started to cry like crazy.

So a month later I went to get some X-rays and lucky me, my curve went from a 33 degree to a 23 degree curve. So my brace is getting my back better. But my doctor said that he wanted it to be at least 17 degrees. And then get it a little tighter. I had to go to another appointment that my mom had made for me. So that day came and Walter made my brace a litter tighter and now I am so used to it. I am so used to it that when I wrote this I didn’t feel anything on me. And I even have to go to sleep with this on.

I plan to do everything that the doctor has ordered for me. I want to do this so when I turn 15 I could take off my brace and be fine. That is my ultimate goal and I plan to work hard at it. Like everything in life. If I work hard, everything that I want will be possible. And for me having my back corrected is the biggest challenge of all.

I will try to keep you posted of the coming events if any. Till then good luck to all of you that are going through this. And believe me the harder you try the easier it will become. And the outcome will be beautiful. So that’s pretty much all I got right now so I’m sure that I will update you .
