I have scoliosis in the lumbar part of my back. When I went for my appointment to see the orthapedic doctor, my x-ray showed a 40 degree curve. I was 9 years old at the time. He recommended wearing a brace to post pone surgery as long as possible. Two weeks later I was fitted for my brace and will be picking it up tomorrow. When the doctor told me I would not be able to cheerlead anymore after having surgery, I was a little upset. However, I have always enjoyed performing and would like to be a part of the drama club in middle school and high school. Right now I'm just concentrating on the idea of having to wear a brace for 23 hours a day. At first, I was scared to have to wear a brace because of it hurting and what other people would think.....now I'm trying to have a positive attitude after reading other people's stories. It's good to know other girls like me are dealing with the same hurdles. I think it will boost my self confidence because I can't change the diagnosis of having scoliosis (I wish I could :) I can only work hard to make it better. I'll keep you posted on how it's going....Those of you out there that have scoliosis, I'm thinking about you and what your going through with all of your struggles..:-) |
