Scoliosis Stories

MATTHEW'S STORY
Submitted September 9, 2006; Updated November 28, 2006

My Name is Matthew and I am now 3 1/2 years old. I was born premature and have overcome many obstacles. My mom and dad noticed a lump in my back at about 8 months old and took me to my pediatrician who advised us to see an orthopaedic specialist. I was diagnosed with Infantile Scoliosis. I have had 3 Boston braces which I managed to get myself out of. My parents decided to try the body cast. My curve is slowly getting worse, latest xray showed a 79% curve. I have asthma too, which is finally under control with a new inhaler.

At the moment, the doctors are performing alot of genetic testing to see if I might have some Connective Tissue Disease. My mom and dad are really concerned about me and are looking everywhere for support groups and anyone to talk to that have been through a similar sittuation.

My orthopaedic is not to sure how long we should continue with the casting or to go ahead with the surgery. Thanks for reading my story,

Update
Mom was able to get me into Shriners in Erie, PA. I'm trying out this new cast which is much better than my other casts I had. The great thing is that they got my curve down from 76 degrees to 32 degrees. My only complaint is that I have alot of backaches. I go back in January to have it changed. Were still waiting on the results of the connective tissue disease.
