Scoliosis Stories

NATALIE'S STORY
Submitted August 16, 2006

Hi, my name is Natalie, I’m 12 years old, we found out I had scoliosis about 2 years ago. I had multiple curves on my spine but I was told it was better to wait until I hit 15 to get a surgery.

I had a Boston brace that I never wore because I was afraid my friends would laugh at me, so as a result my spine curved more and faster and by June 2005 my doctor said I needed a surgery soon.

I got schedule for surgery in October, I went through a lot of procedures (blood taken, shots to produce more blood into my body, MRI, etc.). When we finally got a surgery date something came out wrong on my blood test so we had to wait until we fixed that.

I finally had schedule for November 14, 2005 .When we got to the hospital I was a little scared and my mom was joking around, she didn’t want to make me nervous. I was in surgery for 9 hours but something went wrong with me during surgery and everything got only half way done, then I got bad news, I needed another surgery.

I wasn’t able to leave the hospital, get or sit up until my next surgery. I cant remember what my reaction was about having to get another procedure because I was taking so much pain medication that I was sleepy all the time. Thank god I had nice nurses and my mom stayed with me through it all, she never went home.

  • 1st and 2nd day, I was just sleepy.
  • 3rd day, I had to sit up and have some liquids and food.
  • 4th and 5th day, I had to walk around the hospital floor.
  • 6th day, I finally went home. The ride was very uncomfortable and whenever we went through a bump it hurt my back. I felt a lot better when I got home because I felt a lot more comfortable in my own bed with my best friends (my big long pillows that I suggest you to buy ,they are very helpful).
  • 7th day I was already standing up and sitting down by myself without any help.

I got fully recovered and out of medications with in two weeks after I got home. I didn’t go to school because it was Christmas vacation, my mother set it up like that so I wont miss a lot of days in case I didn’t feel very well after surgery, but I went back the first day of January and I stayed a full day with no discomfort.

As of today I feel like I didn’t even get a surgery except for when I have to put lotion on my scar, it feels very weird and hurts a little. My doctor told me I’m able now to do anything. I could do cheerleading this year and I could get together every Friday during winter with my friends to ice skate (which it was a huge issue for me at the very beginning of my surgery). I’ve already been to Hershey Park and ridden Rolla coasters in July.

I grew two or three inches taller and I would recommend not being so afraid because after all it’s worth it and it’s not a big deal and remember I had two surgeries back to back within one week. Pain is not an issue because doctors make sure you get enough pain medicine and they won’t let you suffer, I even need it a different pain medicine than morphine because my body got use to it and it didn’t work on me anymore, doctors call the Pain Team (group of specialist on pain medication) and they arrange a new medicine for me, I never even cry for pain or discomfort just when I had to get up for the first time and went I got gas on my stomach from not eating. It’s not like I would go thru it again but if I could help anybody with they fears about scoliosis I would say in my case it was fine for the such a big surgery it is and after all you hardly remember what happened, all I know is because my mother told me about it.
