LEARN MORE ABOUT NURSE SHARON
SpineKIDS.com is Nurse Sharon's vision. She is the surgical coordinator for Long Island Spine Specialists in Commack, NY. We asked Nurse Sharon some questions to help you get to know her better.
When did you decide to become a nurse?
"I always liked helping people. When I was in high school, I got a job as an aide in an adult home. I knew then that I wanted to be a nurse. I didn't go to nursing school until I was 25, but I worked as a nurses aide up until then."
What do you like to do in your spare time?
"Most of my spare time is spent being a mom. I enjoy watching my kids compete in sports. I enjoy going to the beach and to the movies."
Who was your role model growing up?
"I didn't really have a role model growing up. I was more focused on myself and on how I could become a good person and what I wanted to be. I worked hard at it and pulled as much knowledge as possible from anyone who crossed my path."
What's the best advice you've ever received?
"The best advice I ever got is more like a saying, "Everything happens for a reason." I really believe that this is true. Sometimes life throws you obstacles and believe it or not, these obstacles force you to push yourself harder to acheive your goals and solve your conflicts with yourself and others."
Do you have any children of your own?
"I have 3 children, two girls ages 19 and 10 and a son who's 11."
Do you have any pets?
"I have 2 dogs, a black lab named Sidney and a Yorkie named Jack V. My son has a dwarf bunny named Rocky. We also have 3 cats; a siamese kitten named Reyes & 2 bengals Benny & Christmas, and 1 goldfish."
What were you like as a kid?
"I was a very active kid. I liked to ride my bike and ride my horses. I had 2 horses named Lady and Sassy when I was younger. We lived across the street from a big old horse farm and we used to play in the barn and make up adventures. In high school, I was a cheerleader for the football and basketball teams."
What is your favorite TV show?
"I have 3 favorite shows. They are Scrubs, The Biggest Loser and Will and Grace."
What is your favorite cartoon?
"Again, I have 3 favorite shows. They are Hey Arnold, As Told By Ginger and Spongebob Squarepants."
What do you like most about your job?
"The thing I like best about my job is seeing the end results of successful spine surgery. I love the people I work with as well as meeting all kinds of patients, each with different problems and backrounds. I'm also grateful to be able to use my creativity and ideas and put them into a positive project like this website."
Did you ever want to be anything else?
"I really like teaching kids about the spine. I have done some presentations at my childrens' schools and the kids find it very interesting. They love the bones and xrays and just being able to touch them. Kids are fun and I love educating them, so if I wasn't a surgical coordinator, I'd probably be a teacher of some kind."
If you could give one piece of encouragement to someone diagnosed with scoliosis, what would it be?
"I would tell them it's curable. Although you'll wonder 'why me?', you are not alone and there are people to help you with your struggle. And eventually, you can help someone with their struggle. Leaning on your family and friends will help you with your journey... and that is what it is, a journey... that will end someday with a positive result."
More from Nurse Sharon...
"I started as a surgical coordinator in 1999 at Long Island Spine (LISS). I remember my first day thinking, 'I am never going to be able to do this job, it's so complicated and hard.' But I surprised myself and now I know my position like the back of my hand.
I came up with the idea of SpineKIDS because I was so used to booking adult surgeries and giving them information via booklets and from what I'd learned in the O.R. when observing procedures. When it came to my first scoliosis case, I had nothing to offer my patient. That's where the idea of SpineKIDS came from. With the help of Dr. M's knowledge and seeing him perform a scoliosis surgery, I was able to learn about scoliosis and now I offer that knowledge to you on SpineKIDS!
I would like to thank Mae, Director of LISS and the very talented webmistress Julie for making my vision of SpineKIDS a reality."
I hope you enjoy SpineKIDS!
