Scoliosis Stories

STEPHANIE'S STORY
Submitted February 25, 2006

Two years ago when I was eleven years old my family had recieved news that we were going to move so my mom, dad, sisters and I all had to go to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor had me bend over and she checked my spine for scoliosis. I didn't know what scoliosis was at the time. She said that my spine was straight.

The next month in January my mom was going to take me swimming in the town pool when she took a look at my back and noticed that I had a large bump on my lower left back. A couple of days later I went into the doctors office and she told me that she thought I had scoliosis. My doctor had refered me to a scoliosis specialist in another town. There, I had an x-ray taken and I found out that I had a 40* lower curve and a 23* upper curve. That day I was taken to *the brace guy* where he had me put on a body sock and he wrapped plaster around my body.

For the next two weeks I was really nervous about getting a back brace. Finally, the time had come. I had to were my back brace to school the next day. It was really uncomfortable. I hated wearing my brace but my mom forces me to.

Now, two years later I am in my second brace. This one doesn't hurt so bad but I do get very hot in it. To make sure know one notices my back brace at school unless I bend over I wear a sweatshirt. My doctor says that I will not need surgery and I will be in my brace anywhere from another 9 months to 1 more year. Now I'm thirteen years old and even though my brace is a living nightmare it's making my back a lot better. Now I'm at 34* lower curve and a 19* upper curve.
